When the laptop closes you will usually find me with a guitar in my hands, reading, or halfway down some new rabbit hole.
I came to music late and on purpose, and it has quietly become what I care about most outside work: fingerstyle guitar above all, a bit of piano to understand what I am hearing, and more singing than I would have admitted a few years ago.
This is the warmer half of the site. Nothing here is on my CV.
A few things
- Nobody in my family played an instrument. I picked up a roommate's ukulele in my twenties and never quite put it down.
- One guitar, four voices at once: bass, rhythm, harmony and melody. That is why fingerstyle won.
- I have a tendency to turn hobbies into things I want to understand from the inside out.
- I am very susceptible to rabbit holes. Music theory and genealogy are two particularly successful examples.
- I still think learning something new is one of the best ways to spend an evening.
Currently
- PlayingFingerstyle arrangements, and learning to sing while the right hand keeps going.
- LearningPiano, mostly as a window into harmony. Ear training most days, usually on a walk.
- ReadingScience fiction, usually. The bigger the idea behind it, the better.
- NextPlaying with other people, and finishing a first song I can call my own.
- ListeningIntimate, melodic things mostly: folk, indie, singer-songwriters, and the occasional complete genre detour.
- ChasingThat moment when something I used to hear only instinctively suddenly becomes something I can recognise, understand, and use.
